A Safe Enviroment
As a caring dental team we take seriously our responsibility to ensure everyone's safety from the transmission of infectious diseases during dental treatment. We would like you to know that this is not a new subject at our practice. We have always taken the utmost precautions to ensure your safety while visiting us. Our office proudly meets and exceeds the strict inflection control guidelines set down by Portuguese Dental Association (Ordem dos Médicos Dentistas). If you have any concerns, questions or comments about our procedures, please feel free to bring them forward. We would welcome the opportunity to put you at ease.
Some steps in the infection control process are obvious like the use of gloves and masks. What you don't see are the many steps conducted behind the scenes like autoclaving and packaging all hand pieces and equipment, using disposable products where possible, cleaning, disinfecting and using barrier techniques in the treatment room for each and every patient to ensure everyone's safety. All our hand pieces and dental instruments are HEAT and STEAM sterilized in hospital-grade Autoclave equipment. This autoclave is monitored every time it is operated and is tested weekly with in-house bacterial indicators. Water lines are cleaned and disinfected regularly.
Most importantly our staff members are thoroughly trained in all safety procedures and regularly attend education courses to remain up to date with the latest information.

Micro-organisms of various kinds may be present practically on every object to a greater or lesser extent. Many of these micro-organisms represent a hazard for human health and can be the cause of various pathologies. It is important to prevent such micro-organisms from passing for one person to the next, namely the occurrence of what is referred to as "cross-infection", by using sterile instruments and operating in controlled conditions. A product is sterile when it is free from living micro-organisms. The purpose of the sterilization process is therefore to eliminate bacteria, viruses and spores. Only an autoclave is able to achieve this sterile state. At the Perfect Smile Clinic we use a hospital-grade Autoclave by Mocom to sterilize all instruments used on patients.

All instruments are packaged and stored in sealed packaging. The packaging is made of a heavy weight medical paper and a transparent light blue polyester/polypropylene that are thermally welded together so as to prevent the invasion of pathogens onto the dental instruments. On the paper side of the packaging, there are changing chemical color indicators that verifies the steam sterilization process and confirmation of the package content sterility.

Ultrasonic cleaning is a process created by high frequency sound waves. The sound waves create high energy cavitation. During cavitation, millions of tiny bubbles form and then implode, releasing enormous amounts of energy and shock waves. This powerful scouring action reaches into minute crevices which cannot be reached by manual scrubbing. The combination of energy and specially formulated solutions make ultrasonic cleaning the most effective method for removing gross and microscopic debris from dental instrument surfaces prior to autoclave sterilization.
Assistina ® 301 Plus |

The Assistina is an essential aid to maintain hand pieces, motors, and attachments. At the touch of a button, this unique device automatically sends cleaning solution through air/water lines, delivering a precise amount of service oil to rotating components, and expels excess fluid from the internal channels. Debits and microbes are in this manner eliminated from the internal components of these instruments prior to the autoclave sterilization.
